Casement Window Maintenance… Keep it Simple!
After a hard day of work, it’s nice to relax and enjoy the view from your windows. So, to keep your windows aesthetically pleasing and working well, here are a few easy things you can do.
Whether your home’s casement windows are older or newer, you know that maintenance is key to extending their life. One essential part of casement window maintenance that homeowners often overlook is lubrication. Casement windows have moving parts that regularly require lubrication.
Simply Put… Lubricate Everything That Moves
Most window manufacturers recommend silicone spray as a safe lubricant that won’t stain but will allow the moving parts to glide smoothly. Manufacturers advise avoiding using oil-based lubricants, as these tend to attract dust and dirt.
Before applying lubricant, see how far the window will open without resistance. It’s important not to force the crank if it becomes difficult to turn or feels like something is grinding in its gears. If this does happen, turn the crank back a few turns. Then, clean off as much dirt and grit as you can using a brush, handheld vacuum cleaner or compressed air.
What if the Window Doesn’t Crank?
Spray a silicone-based lubricant onto the operator arms, gears, slides and locking mechanisms. Note that operator arms have multiple joints—make sure you apply lubricant to each component. Most crank mechanisms allow the removal of both the crank and the cover. If you can remove the cover, apply lubricant to the crank gears. Wait a few minutes for the lubricant to seep into the joints, then gently try to open and close the window.
